Dr. Linda Burghardt is the scholar-in-residence at the Holocaust Memorial & Tolerance Center and a journalist and author from New York. As the daughter of two Holocaust survivors from Vienna, her work has always been guided by her heritage. She worked for 20 years as a freelance reporter for The New York Times and has contributed news articles and first-person essays to numerous other publications, in addition to being the author of three books.
Dr. Burghardt earned her Ph.D. from Long Island University in a combined program of Holocaust Studies and Information Science. Her dissertation was entitled, "Last Waltz in Vienna: Escape and Survival at the Dawn of the Holocaust." She has a master's degree in creative writing from Queens College/CUNY and a B.A. in English literature and composition from CCNY. She is a graduate of the Bronx High School of Science.
In every aspect of her research, writing and lectures, Dr. Burghardt puts into practice her commitment to preserving Holocaust memory, and her dedication to using the insights gained through deep study of the European genocide to guide her toward a specific goal: to create a series of universal systems that might transcend the context of the Holocaust and be applicable to the struggle for human survival in other times, places and genocides.
